Alongside other legal distilleries founded in the wake of the Excise Act, Mortlach is officially founded on the site of an older illicit distillery, becoming the first legal distillery in Dufftown, now one of the epicentres of Speyside whisky distilling.

A special release bottling of 15 year old Mortlach, this was part of the 2018 collaboration between Diageo and HBO, which saw their Classic Malts range reimagined as being somehow related to the landed houses of the Game of Thrones television series. Released in 2019, this was the final instalment of these limited editions, and was finished in ex-bourbon casks.
